I did that...put the CD in and tried to boot from it but it didn't work. You might have to boot up using a CD with XP or floppy boot disk. James K. Try connecting your HDD to other HDD port. Sep 12, 2010 #8 cw100 TS Rookie Topic Starter I have not installed an operating system on the new hard drive because the dell is not recognizing the drive as being there (same problem as the old hard drive) so it will not allow me to install the operating system.
Do you have a Desktop Computer you can use >this might be a bit complex , but you can remove the hard drive from the laptop and place it into the desktop and copy the data over ? I thought that maybe my hard drive had died on me so I purchased a new hard drive and it is the same exact problem still occuring.

When I strike F1 the message No Bootable devices shows. Is there a way to either install windows on an external hard drive and boot the laptop up that way? Try getting into the BIOS again.
